I am sorry for the long, long delay in posting. Life has gotten a little crazy since I am starting up a new business. And with all the life-changing decisions actually beginning to take form, something has to give. Sadly, it is this blog. However, you can find me at my new web-home - <a href="http://lavishyou.com/">lavishyou.com</a>. <br />
<br />
I started Remodel This House for fun and to keep me busy on the house, a mix of journaling and accountability in one. Blogging has been a true joy, plus I met a lot of sweet people who are all so talented. Putting RTH on a blogging-freeze is bitter sweet. <br />
<br />
Before I signed off, I thought I would share the future plans - just in case you are curious. They are just plans, which are subject to change. <br />
<ul><li>Sell our house </li>
<li>Move closer to hubby's work</li>
<li>Open Lavish store-front </li>
<li>Kick butt and take names</li>
</ul>Okay, so they are very generic plans. But you get the idea of where our life is heading. Hope to see you around the interwebs! If you have any questions about any projects, ideas, etc., <a href="mailto:bethany@lavishyou.com">email me</a>! <br />

I am still around, just not posting lately. Shame on me! But I do have a good excuse...this:<br />

Yep, I got a new computer and haven't mastered it yet. I am working on it, and it is so hard to play on a new computer...let me tell ya. *wink* Even Paris can hardly stay awake.<br />
<br />

The problem is that I haven't transferred my pictures over so I can't share any projects. I will get this done asap. Anyways, I need some advice on apps. What do you like, use, love, etc.? I'm open to any suggestions!Bethanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03323571942171417314noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6746607057016252990.post-28659406763727138272011-09-19T07:59:00.000-05:002011-09-19T07:59:50.934-05:00Happy Fall Y'allThe first day of fall might not be until the 23rd, but I decided to finally be early on something and get my mantel looking a little more fall-ish...especially since it was still decorated in spring decor. Actually, it was a mixture of spring and summer. But that is no excuse, it looked not-put-together and was in need of serious attention. So I took 5 minutes to make it presentable.<br />
<div><br />
</div><div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">I didn't want to go with traditional fall colors, pumpkins, or leaves. I did the traditional fall decor last year, so I thought a change was needed. This year I went with a neutral color palette with touches of warm, rustic colors. Here is what I managed to rummage from the house:</div></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhF1rVcASYCJMCc7UphTLfz13eAu3CsHJocn7r3Id-gcf8cLaMeFG1lsUtJv4kMhumwTaH79DugUuhRctZ1jBqilnDIf8EDrAnPvsxSksFS2In2UVInFfsZdiXrEKw2tR6XEg4-30GG0bQ/s1600/IMG_4070.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" rba="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhF1rVcASYCJMCc7UphTLfz13eAu3CsHJocn7r3Id-gcf8cLaMeFG1lsUtJv4kMhumwTaH79DugUuhRctZ1jBqilnDIf8EDrAnPvsxSksFS2In2UVInFfsZdiXrEKw2tR6XEg4-30GG0bQ/s320/IMG_4070.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">The decor is simple...which is a change for me. Usually I really play it up with lots of colors and elements, but I really like the changes. On the left side, I staked some books and topped them with a twine-wrapped candle holder and a small brass owl. I also layered my diy chalkboard in front of a window. This chalkboard is an upcycled thrift store frame that I use and reuse for every season.</div></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLx6iuozj16y67SmlZoR8cGXDdjt3fA99LGTlRkH2e57OAlJhKdVrb9XJ-3KWYEoVye3sLcb6T5sd3GhSfl-xyDxer0AntRle0_c7I33hMfnK6IKWvSGryaKMobTtPk3-krbs9wQnRBok/s1600/IMG_4071.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" rba="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLx6iuozj16y67SmlZoR8cGXDdjt3fA99LGTlRkH2e57OAlJhKdVrb9XJ-3KWYEoVye3sLcb6T5sd3GhSfl-xyDxer0AntRle0_c7I33hMfnK6IKWvSGryaKMobTtPk3-krbs9wQnRBok/s320/IMG_4071.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">The right side of the mantel has a tall lantern with another twine-wrapped candle holder. Then I placed a glass full of corks on top of my vintage spool. Finally I hung a set of metal keys from the window with twine. </div></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9uh0kfrwJJZjmR3YAD6TOeF7lfwwuyqJapi2Dt9hNnkDz4beHtF5d1-PX5iu5iMxWe4XqXvaFOnZN0Qb12vDdTGMTEGS3LteprthwXZyJhPW9yi9865Tfw6OHFz1Zss98UVSzMQl7vYc/s1600/IMG_4072.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" rba="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9uh0kfrwJJZjmR3YAD6TOeF7lfwwuyqJapi2Dt9hNnkDz4beHtF5d1-PX5iu5iMxWe4XqXvaFOnZN0Qb12vDdTGMTEGS3LteprthwXZyJhPW9yi9865Tfw6OHFz1Zss98UVSzMQl7vYc/s320/IMG_4072.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Easy, easy, easy. And the decor is versatile enough to last through Thanksgiving. I don't plan to decorate for Halloween so I should be good to go for a few months...yay!</div></div>Bethanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03323571942171417314noreply@blogger.com17tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6746607057016252990.post-54520435866095890502011-09-15T15:50:00.000-05:002011-09-15T15:50:12.692-05:00Lavish<i>This post is going to be more diary-ish than any other. I'm typing what I feel. If you don't want to read my musings, then just <a href="http://www.lavishyou.com/">click here</a> for the website.</i><br />
<br />
I always have ideas running through my head. It is part of the reason why I don't sleep well at night, I can't turn the brain off. And one idea/dream has really stuck with me - having a funky boutique with lots of charm called Lavish. I finally feel like I am being led along this path and that my dream could actually become a reality. I don't know what will come of it, but if I don't start walking towards it, I will never make it.<br />
<br />
It started out with this blog, my first public appearance and showing of DIY projects and decor. It was scary, still is sometimes, to put my house and life out for public viewing and comments. But I have loved every second of it and each comment makes me smile, even if some aren't the nicest. It seems like everyone loves my thrifty repurposing and furniture rehabs. Truth is, most of the furniture rehabs aren't for my house...they are just because I love to fix something up. They sit in my garage, at my parents' house, or in the storage unit collecting dust.<br />
<br />
So I have just been living life and blogging a little when a friend told me that I should sign up for a booth at <a href="http://remodelthishouse.blogspot.com/2011/08/ecofest.html">EcoFest</a>, which I did. Moment of madness? Anyways, I worked and worked (and recruited my parents to work and work) to get ready. I had no clue who would come, what would happen, or if I would even have anyone enter my booth. There was no turning back though - I paid my booth fee and was testing the waters a little deeper with an actual booth, not just pictures online.<br />
<br />
And you know what? The booth was a hit! Everyone loved the items, said the booth was the "must see", and continually asked where my store front was. Did you catch that....where is my store! I was over the moon because actually hearing the words from complete strangers gave me a huge leap towards my dream, not just a step. That huge leap is confidence. Now I know that I can do this.<br />
<br />
To continue along the path, I now have a <a href="http://www.lavishyou.com/">website for Lavish</a>. A bonafide, grown-up, .com website - <a href="http://www.lavishyou.com/">www.lavishyou.com</a>. The site has information about furniture rehabs and e-decorating, but still needs a lot of work. (It is brand new, cut me a little slack.) The plan is to modify the site to fit my *hopefully* ever-growing business and one-day store front. I would be so happy if you would hop on over to Lavish and take a look around. Please let me know what you think...be it good or bad.<br />
<br />
What does the future hold? I have no idea. But I do know that there will be some major life changing decisions and moments in the year to come. I am going to continue walking down the dream path, side-by-side with my family, and see where it takes us.<br />

They are versatile and perfect for my ever-changing-moods. So when it came to a sign for my booth, I knew that a chalkboard was the way to go. I had planned to upcycle a large picture frame into a chalkboard, but then one of my projects went a little wrong and I ended up with a projector screen that is perfect for a chalkboard sign!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisYtjLz-eCuaRvAti85Dv7art6FXF3RN1NX1noTkb0bdkAcE6XO7hrschkBlFVH-IAQzncZUC4Z2CxGkY4RQgTOU6Bzjnu69hqwU4ixJfGdv1egsQtLiUTQPihr8aE9MS3WliF2QG1JNQ/s1600/IMG_3927.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisYtjLz-eCuaRvAti85Dv7art6FXF3RN1NX1noTkb0bdkAcE6XO7hrschkBlFVH-IAQzncZUC4Z2CxGkY4RQgTOU6Bzjnu69hqwU4ixJfGdv1egsQtLiUTQPihr8aE9MS3WliF2QG1JNQ/s400/IMG_3927.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
My original plan was to make the projector screen base the tripod lamp. That plan went out the window when I couldn't get the screen separated from the base with my small arsenal of tools. I was bummed out until I found the <a href="http://remodelthishouse.blogspot.com/2011/08/tripod-lamp-from-music-stand-diy.html">music stand and turned it into the tripod lamp</a>, freeing up the projector screen for another project - a chalkboard.<br />
<br />
I'm sure y'all know how to make a chalkboard, but in case you don't... just paint chalkboard paint onto whatever you want. (Preferably not live things.) I laid out the projector screen in the garage and went to town painting. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQ0uxqzlg0Ss857W1icAps9rIFgIW9zNM2th1M_-qdW644ITrA74VW0s6beNnR1smpTpEO7gPI0Xu7YUsovn2SZbITVVM37OcomuU7xQZwR1Viq-DQfu-QMVJ7ejzgzL24Xu_BrQE25To/s1600/IMG_3992.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQ0uxqzlg0Ss857W1icAps9rIFgIW9zNM2th1M_-qdW644ITrA74VW0s6beNnR1smpTpEO7gPI0Xu7YUsovn2SZbITVVM37OcomuU7xQZwR1Viq-DQfu-QMVJ7ejzgzL24Xu_BrQE25To/s400/IMG_3992.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
The projector screen was perfect for my booth since it is lightweight and compact. Plus I can change the wording and use it in my craft room too. And the screen was only $5 at a thrift store. I am giddy with all the possibilities of my new five dollar chalkboard. Here is the upcycled projector screen in action, with me sitting on a fabulous repurposed bench (and ignore my mom's finger):<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh82KTGvvp7GjXDM5heXr0KcjKGEe8LRUqNaPzUJoVtub9HcHYJjMyI9v7pf3FcLpEjd68-0XKWhhUDm7a4J1zayVZlYnjYdCFFwzpfl1qq1BgKLeSpoqb1-F1Kuh-nZ_XDs5EYPnXLho4/s1600/IMG_1244.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="241" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh82KTGvvp7GjXDM5heXr0KcjKGEe8LRUqNaPzUJoVtub9HcHYJjMyI9v7pf3FcLpEjd68-0XKWhhUDm7a4J1zayVZlYnjYdCFFwzpfl1qq1BgKLeSpoqb1-F1Kuh-nZ_XDs5EYPnXLho4/s400/IMG_1244.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>Bethanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03323571942171417314noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6746607057016252990.post-82828707482861785382011-09-12T16:42:00.000-05:002011-09-12T16:42:01.376-05:00Stamp MakingEven though I used to scrapbook, I have never once thought about making a personalized stamp. To tell the truth, I didn't even know you could make stamps until about a week ago - yep, I might have been living under a rock. But after making my free paint chip business cards, I was in desperate need of a stamp. <br />
<br />
I looked online and was going to buy a stamp, but I wasn't too thrilled with the idea of spending about $25 dollars on a stamp that I might not use a lot since this is a trial run. So with a little google-ing and pinterest-ing, I decided to DIY a stamp. The supplies needed to make a stamp are carving tools, pencil, and stamp carving block. I picked up everything at Hobby Lobby while it was 30% off.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEaEMJIJ6R7_BLNH3CfjwjgY6FNb3P0zgxtOxmZ23qSr7q5rK-hlPh6m3rDUSSpyXR7RfBMySr4Okuwp9_q-pAgiTCNqtJM9LKlwDGrDQ-WDzgu5b1KOM_-16CjFsE55UGiVLxFVQIO8Y/s1600/IMG_1189.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEaEMJIJ6R7_BLNH3CfjwjgY6FNb3P0zgxtOxmZ23qSr7q5rK-hlPh6m3rDUSSpyXR7RfBMySr4Okuwp9_q-pAgiTCNqtJM9LKlwDGrDQ-WDzgu5b1KOM_-16CjFsE55UGiVLxFVQIO8Y/s320/IMG_1189.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
First step is to get the graphic onto the carving block. I used the old pencil and trace method to transfer an image. Be sure that you make the graphic reverse since it will stamp backwards.<br />
<br />
There are two different ways to carve a stamp - one is the graphic sticks out (like normal stamps where you only see the graphic when stamped) and the other is the graphic is carved in and the background is the ink color when stamped. That explanation is bad, but I carved both ways and like the not-normal stamp better.<br />
<br />
After your graphic is transferred, get to carving. I found that it works best to use the smalled carving tool to outline the graphic first. Then use the larger tools to cut away the big sections. Also, turn the carving block instead of the carving tools. Trust me, you can get more detailed by turning the block.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2RfhY8f-vkzJo2SHD3fHi2UK2xS3R2ejjxWvD5e1WTfc07fc_ZOOMh5-BUSJlNkk4L19LDn4jIM7D56LnodQ2TXY7xK-GlIaoBDkKV37kCrXGpuzVhg_sXcqqsZH-KOxDkFCL0svCEmQ/s1600/IMG_1192.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2RfhY8f-vkzJo2SHD3fHi2UK2xS3R2ejjxWvD5e1WTfc07fc_ZOOMh5-BUSJlNkk4L19LDn4jIM7D56LnodQ2TXY7xK-GlIaoBDkKV37kCrXGpuzVhg_sXcqqsZH-KOxDkFCL0svCEmQ/s320/IMG_1192.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Carving didn't take long. I made two different stamps in about 20 minutes...not too bad for a first timer. The hardest to carve was the more detailed one, of course. And my stamps are on the small size since the paint chips are business card size.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaD9wBHgG5WNfeh18CJ736KDVMsfy5hFjJ034RB34aw4uIaFZZaiKf5R1_DVXP6Js95KdjfRc9p9q4Uykp-cH-V7jYwT2tah6nPco3mKo9VPBZDYhifSwGiB-MEr1F9-hNO67hC4TWw-Y/s1600/IMG_1202.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaD9wBHgG5WNfeh18CJ736KDVMsfy5hFjJ034RB34aw4uIaFZZaiKf5R1_DVXP6Js95KdjfRc9p9q4Uykp-cH-V7jYwT2tah6nPco3mKo9VPBZDYhifSwGiB-MEr1F9-hNO67hC4TWw-Y/s320/IMG_1202.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhH2rR85LGTxLhyphenhyphenEL5vyUc8trRpr-S68oDaOX3NzoxUs5QtX6G1_A5VE7T9rz-FrtQZM16f1QVNsQnTUC8YNy-aIGr2DrZGX4_sONLZkO030P0YjkxDiXtG2QYibE3AKopBWM_MobCiVXs/s1600/IMG_1208.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhH2rR85LGTxLhyphenhyphenEL5vyUc8trRpr-S68oDaOX3NzoxUs5QtX6G1_A5VE7T9rz-FrtQZM16f1QVNsQnTUC8YNy-aIGr2DrZGX4_sONLZkO030P0YjkxDiXtG2QYibE3AKopBWM_MobCiVXs/s320/IMG_1208.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Now I need to make a stamp for the backside of the cards with the website and contact info. Shouldn't be hard to do now that I know how. Have y'all made any stamps? <br />
<br />
Psst - I watched <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tnGAxq4UYbU">this video</a> to help me get started - it is long but detailed. I didn't record making my stamps since I don't have a tripod and need two hands to carve.Bethanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03323571942171417314noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6746607057016252990.post-80585791566078962762011-09-01T13:06:00.000-05:002011-09-01T13:06:24.438-05:00Outside House TourI have had a few people remind me that I don't have many, if any, pictures of the outside of my casa. Well, that is because the outside receives minimal love and has a to-do list a mile long. I've been busy at work on the inside and only remember to mow the grass when I can't find Paris in it. Okay, it isn't that bad, but the yard is in an embarrassingly sad shape.<br />
<br />
So to appease the masses (all 3 of you) I decided to make a video tour of the outside. Please note that my appearance is seriously lacking since I was doing yard work in 100 degrees at the time of this video. Without further ado, the much-awaited, completely unedited video:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dzdAh0jChyjPihxYw65iIXTb5bZiISwYypsOH_zM1fqZ4ltWshAl-qNZY-cm7-DSgTrHRDOBp-xgdsV1ZaHCQ' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><br />
Things to note:<br />
<ul><li>Can't hear me talking at the beginning. The wind didn't want to play nice while I tried to film. </li>
<li>Weed beds, not flower beds. They are more like jungle beds...maybe that is the new eco-friendly design? These really must get attention soon.</li>
<li>Number of crepe myrtles. There must have been a mad sale on them because there are 9 of them in our yard. Yep, 9! And I have successfully killed two of them already.</li>
<li>Monkey grass everywhere. Must have been on sale just like the crepe myrtles. I hate the stuff and think it make that house look dated, not to mention the bugs and snakes (eek!) that could live in it.</li>
<li>My spray painting area is well used. I would love to have an actual spray booth, but until I get my dream home, the cast off mirror and plant stand will work nicely.</li>
<li>The video quality is bad. I saved it in a web format so it would load up quicker.</li>
<li>Anyways seems to be the word of the day.</li>
</ul>Anyways, (he he) I need your help and ideas for my plea about the back yard. We want to connect the patio to the master bed door since the door currently steps out into the yard. The plan is to cover the existing concrete patio or tear it out. What thinks y'all? And since I am a DIYer, I wanted to try my hand at making my own business card. So I started brain storming ideas and landed on paint chips - they are colorful and a good representation of my business. Plus I have a ton of them laying around the house, and I can always make a trip to the store to get a few more if need be. <br />
<br />
To make my business cards, I used Valspar 6-color chips. They are the perfect size. You will need paint chips, scrap paper, and a stapler - I forgot to mention that these are also note pads...yay for double duty items!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyCrXQUAR04NyjajSa3qCzEITJeMW3oWTvep9WbI_8IGJ_n0G2O-VpITFzE9wifdJdMRNkCGffONssHbbUEKNpEid_9YJyuB8GpoB1gNyhpUelECIkXjU84LFf1_je0BPhCEYiijJNJiw/s1600/Picture+005.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" qaa="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyCrXQUAR04NyjajSa3qCzEITJeMW3oWTvep9WbI_8IGJ_n0G2O-VpITFzE9wifdJdMRNkCGffONssHbbUEKNpEid_9YJyuB8GpoB1gNyhpUelECIkXjU84LFf1_je0BPhCEYiijJNJiw/s320/Picture+005.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
First, fold the smallest color over to make a flap. Then put about 8 pieces of paper under the flap:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9MLH_GEpdT3gWG7RsVx23HkthzPn-uGS2Whx6c4lySDlLn7qH-BcsKrRP1-nkxNsdCtMvjZ-nAtIdFS-8JKUEDVJ3lv6qrLNMXzj8lN-74TES1R6x-_bNeH55b1X3nDmDDVgiJTuF1H8/s1600/Picture+006.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" qaa="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9MLH_GEpdT3gWG7RsVx23HkthzPn-uGS2Whx6c4lySDlLn7qH-BcsKrRP1-nkxNsdCtMvjZ-nAtIdFS-8JKUEDVJ3lv6qrLNMXzj8lN-74TES1R6x-_bNeH55b1X3nDmDDVgiJTuF1H8/s320/Picture+006.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br />
Staple:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRPpuvbkLsMt7La02_X-PSlmAPPErOCD0QYo4D6VoAgV7jAXb0kkR38cF2A_rYd_BzJkETbn9V0GiI7gh_5aZmccrTNFIBQXVnBkkU2NmYcY5WNMFOwhIjO8uwSK2iTv606XYxPW61Sic/s1600/Picture+007.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" qaa="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRPpuvbkLsMt7La02_X-PSlmAPPErOCD0QYo4D6VoAgV7jAXb0kkR38cF2A_rYd_BzJkETbn9V0GiI7gh_5aZmccrTNFIBQXVnBkkU2NmYcY5WNMFOwhIjO8uwSK2iTv606XYxPW61Sic/s320/Picture+007.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Finally, just fold over the rest of the paint chip and tuck it under the little flap:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpIU6O0TnaDcVUYhAAe7W4A6Pi8udYkUOdV9FqS8RgFZqUGSPNHtiFiHRse_3GQtvzaoyfzwFO8ej9jzKUYLdK2Npc2pxO9KnxC2vPq_ULgmRPpeTIHKP4i4p1gENUt8aFTbkJ4JNjDkk/s1600/Picture+008.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" qaa="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpIU6O0TnaDcVUYhAAe7W4A6Pi8udYkUOdV9FqS8RgFZqUGSPNHtiFiHRse_3GQtvzaoyfzwFO8ej9jzKUYLdK2Npc2pxO9KnxC2vPq_ULgmRPpeTIHKP4i4p1gENUt8aFTbkJ4JNjDkk/s320/Picture+008.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAj5Av6upIFGvbT_4HHt2lo3oUZeKYyriHUeDfyYTovmJGEX_ErzvGTeu3eFSGXBLXtA-6noPRaMTFd7sw1EK4V_Xu1cjiwQVQV1dUMFUqCWtrYt3A81HPCS47J-KvxIPTQYoeru2HyKU/s1600/Picture+009.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" qaa="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAj5Av6upIFGvbT_4HHt2lo3oUZeKYyriHUeDfyYTovmJGEX_ErzvGTeu3eFSGXBLXtA-6noPRaMTFd7sw1EK4V_Xu1cjiwQVQV1dUMFUqCWtrYt3A81HPCS47J-KvxIPTQYoeru2HyKU/s320/Picture+009.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
So easy, so fast, and so FREE!!! But you are probably saying to yourself "those don't have any info on them..." I know, that is the second part of the project - stamping the cards. And since I am a DIYer, I wanted to try my hand at making my own stamp too. Which I succeeded at. So details on a DIY stamp is coming your way.<br />
<br />
Any business card makers out there? Or have you seen any unique ideas that you care to share?<br />
<br />
<em>And these are the business cards that I am using at the moment. They were inspired by EcoFest since it is all about the environment and being "green". I bet the business card design will change as my business develops...but I probably will always have the little paint chip note pads around since they are cute, and people love free items.</em><br />

And the console table that I have been using to house my sewing machine is not very practical. Yes, a console table. It is great for the length, but it is a little high and it is a lot too big for the guest bedroom. So, I decided I would build a cabinet. I have had success with a headboard and a desk, so why not a sewing cabinet?! My inspiration for the cabinet came from my friend's folding IKEA table in her kitchen. It has great storage and folding leaves, which seems perfect for this project.<br />
<br />
First I measured my sewing machine to see how large the cabinet needed to be - about 20" deep. Then it was time to cut the plywood - two sides, the bottom, a shelf, the top, and one leaf.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIX88fLwFAG-ETQ6aCjKx55CxL7QAZPVS8cpyICnRrj28oi3p3AuPCLSVlz8JHk2RzVz2BygDCXJ9YweWPFR5YUbWaEhQapv9o6FGO6YJp92bg0a-bfPtsESFGcZVU2vzNqYbbyfNE8Ls/s1600/IMG_3698.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIX88fLwFAG-ETQ6aCjKx55CxL7QAZPVS8cpyICnRrj28oi3p3AuPCLSVlz8JHk2RzVz2BygDCXJ9YweWPFR5YUbWaEhQapv9o6FGO6YJp92bg0a-bfPtsESFGcZVU2vzNqYbbyfNE8Ls/s320/IMG_3698.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEga8mtST-RtOuZGoVhFYFmr9ckPd5cIUPf1ZwbXCcWpKZ5iLLm-hgERKWwISgmzUp45Xx5ERUFEN_DW4PH_0Hr9gDEkEPdV6NE1ukgVpl_SL8v6h8RrBvNPFIWFmkZ6_CmZFe-vfDoapxc/s1600/IMG_3699.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEga8mtST-RtOuZGoVhFYFmr9ckPd5cIUPf1ZwbXCcWpKZ5iLLm-hgERKWwISgmzUp45Xx5ERUFEN_DW4PH_0Hr9gDEkEPdV6NE1ukgVpl_SL8v6h8RrBvNPFIWFmkZ6_CmZFe-vfDoapxc/s320/IMG_3699.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Then I drilled pilot holes and drilled out enough room to counter-sink the screws.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0sMWfjdJcKpazYHQaFGOftctW7MSU-yrLpDRe42NUfdPKROVHuxqYVDGAG3KvNM2q0Gc74D_bphYtu7y3iIKsD843CH3Z43dGu0PyUZFS7LRJ96hQ9cl2FDp1fxes_W4pzx3lwxIl9R8/s1600/IMG_3703.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0sMWfjdJcKpazYHQaFGOftctW7MSU-yrLpDRe42NUfdPKROVHuxqYVDGAG3KvNM2q0Gc74D_bphYtu7y3iIKsD843CH3Z43dGu0PyUZFS7LRJ96hQ9cl2FDp1fxes_W4pzx3lwxIl9R8/s320/IMG_3703.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Now it was time to assemble the box. I used a little wood glue and a few screws to hold the box together. First I installed the sides to the bottom piece. Then I installed the shelf, and then the top. So I worked from the bottom up. And here is my secret - I used a saw horse to keep the side pieces stable since I only have two arms.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWpRi5VX_MRJJaL1r70aN9l5QEq6s_mC9orD7MbHfVO_mTP5HNXnfY8JvTY-ltt1IJCUJgzI9LUmVizQforkR0LgwJDhYPUvkp6CMQ2ueQvxZzFUWU_3t-EO8QyHC1anspvOEyW_CVYOw/s1600/061.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWpRi5VX_MRJJaL1r70aN9l5QEq6s_mC9orD7MbHfVO_mTP5HNXnfY8JvTY-ltt1IJCUJgzI9LUmVizQforkR0LgwJDhYPUvkp6CMQ2ueQvxZzFUWU_3t-EO8QyHC1anspvOEyW_CVYOw/s320/061.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br />
Once this was built, I flipped it over to install the leaf. I hinged the leaf so it would hang to the side when not in use. This makes the foot-print of the cabinet much smaller, but I can easily raise the leaf when I am sewing.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkyj9qJwD-z4n9SJb0Y2RrzA10Ve38kcBtZOwCavE2QEgofw6nGoBv9Trypc118MhUS2nddS-cVkKRIa3POGf0Kbb6ITGJeYeTTiEaGGy5CcSXOVhXgKVqYdnhc4mY9-Q7sZ4kQ10los0/s1600/074.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkyj9qJwD-z4n9SJb0Y2RrzA10Ve38kcBtZOwCavE2QEgofw6nGoBv9Trypc118MhUS2nddS-cVkKRIa3POGf0Kbb6ITGJeYeTTiEaGGy5CcSXOVhXgKVqYdnhc4mY9-Q7sZ4kQ10los0/s320/074.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Now the box is built! I filled the holes with wood filler and then primed and painted it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwWQf0D3n5A5EVoI4xkoB6ocdNuX1o6704_yjxR9-9i_iq34eWN5V4rE0wnpOdeZId-sDcVjzVAtkTvJLp8McmyACyTn3KmmipM4PTuXRvcM6l0OvVDpiXUGIfJbF4lKbGfhIQUOn2UWo/s1600/IMG_3712_1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" qaa="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwWQf0D3n5A5EVoI4xkoB6ocdNuX1o6704_yjxR9-9i_iq34eWN5V4rE0wnpOdeZId-sDcVjzVAtkTvJLp8McmyACyTn3KmmipM4PTuXRvcM6l0OvVDpiXUGIfJbF4lKbGfhIQUOn2UWo/s320/IMG_3712_1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIp-7xs9xcyWcXQHLVAb0QuPiDjr7ctthMcg5ANgRGKiM9HCBwwm5_KZ3_GuQ4ZCOVFHUVz4LPTXFbKqcDBM5mEb7VoVurAAMOlncPqGCMLjGMKntgtLmVmkqx-eGqqXBP0ehnl0B9Jvo/s1600/IMG_3765.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" qaa="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIp-7xs9xcyWcXQHLVAb0QuPiDjr7ctthMcg5ANgRGKiM9HCBwwm5_KZ3_GuQ4ZCOVFHUVz4LPTXFbKqcDBM5mEb7VoVurAAMOlncPqGCMLjGMKntgtLmVmkqx-eGqqXBP0ehnl0B9Jvo/s320/IMG_3765.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
But, I don't like the finished product. Not because of the box or construction of it...but because I am not happy with the guest room / craft room. It isn't working for me, it seems like I am working for it. So, this box might or might not stick around because a desk overhaul is in the works. And I am not using the cabinet to sew with...it has become a storage cabinet - prepare for a scary photo:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlriY3HumKLEv98n1M0vq0dkR0ryRzLNaDDw7gurKVn0WqwSakku0fKQjHWNPUrk-o8zgT8rQroRSzKSokJjIial9qhtk8E7szUfN66dWqwuoXQ-lt03SGBbFsIN4rexKHtR7ni62k2TA/s1600/Picture.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" qaa="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlriY3HumKLEv98n1M0vq0dkR0ryRzLNaDDw7gurKVn0WqwSakku0fKQjHWNPUrk-o8zgT8rQroRSzKSokJjIial9qhtk8E7szUfN66dWqwuoXQ-lt03SGBbFsIN4rexKHtR7ni62k2TA/s320/Picture.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div>The cabinet houses paint supplies and canvas, as well as a few to-do projects on the top. I have the sewing machine on my desk. Building the cabinet was good practice, but not the right solution for my space since it isn't being used for the intended purpose. Back to the drawing board...or pinterest for inspiration.Bethanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03323571942171417314noreply@blogger.com35tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6746607057016252990.post-51942013442896678792011-08-25T14:14:00.000-05:002011-08-25T14:14:53.784-05:00EcoFestI'm finally doing it. This dog and pony show of mine is hitting the road and hoping to make it. In English - I signed up for a booth at the upcoming <a href="http://www.conwayecofest.com/">EcoFest</a> in Conway on September 10th. It is a little scary, stepping out into the big world and putting my wares out for public viewing and, hopefully, sale. But it is time. I have been hoarding items and rehabbing them with passion. Now, I am going to test the waters with the buying public. <br />
<br />
I have lots of ideas and projects up my sleeve for EcoFest. From my repurposed business cards, to my booth decor and items, I will share it here. And in the spirit of sharing, here are some projects I've been busy with:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_ufMxmSJNG4nO8dJ1xXiCrGLYJriucmdVsDWTggL0taj4Cf-ZLAgA2hb2GOwQUwQY75xtPxbxLaughOM5_s_qZkmqN74gsDHTLHWWT9y3_q3K2DSwWCNkthn2lyMVdjg8e2oy4hpwtYQ/s1600/Picture+001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" qaa="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_ufMxmSJNG4nO8dJ1xXiCrGLYJriucmdVsDWTggL0taj4Cf-ZLAgA2hb2GOwQUwQY75xtPxbxLaughOM5_s_qZkmqN74gsDHTLHWWT9y3_q3K2DSwWCNkthn2lyMVdjg8e2oy4hpwtYQ/s320/Picture+001.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br />

Plus tons more!! I have plenty of projects to talk about, I just need to put the paint brush down long enough to actually get them loaded on the ol' blog. Think I might be entering the blog-burn-out stage where I can't seem to get the posts online. Someone please light a fire under me and get me going again. Or maybe I just need another red bull!<br />

Well, I knew that I was going to try to make it a lamp. I haven't ever made a lamp...until now. And the best part is that this is an easy project and can be done quickly.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">You will need a stand, and a lamp kit. (Plus a bulb if you want it to shine, and a lampshade if you choose.) And yes, that is the <a href="http://remodelthishouse.blogspot.com/2011/08/cutting-up-hi-macs-diy-style.html">old range</a> and a messy dining room. In my defense, I "lost" my camera and I don't stage photos, I just take them.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9IXxNUwvGYcfo91L0RBA8CMOJr5urifCA29vwzK7TVX-SUPpcKv5DvWwDZCxlkbwkJS6F1rm5FMKdULpHDbNRoc0Ee62vvyMv0BZw1jOG9aUDSNoFMBzMSUnnSl1AwgUYjICWgt6JhiY/s1600/IMG_3933.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" qaa="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9IXxNUwvGYcfo91L0RBA8CMOJr5urifCA29vwzK7TVX-SUPpcKv5DvWwDZCxlkbwkJS6F1rm5FMKdULpHDbNRoc0Ee62vvyMv0BZw1jOG9aUDSNoFMBzMSUnnSl1AwgUYjICWgt6JhiY/s320/IMG_3933.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
</div>First, open the package. Ha! I'm not going to be that detailed. Really first, run the wire from the lamp kit up the center tube of the music stand. <br />
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJ4qYXyPJU0GBm7iWTabOD_6QflP_OlsQplapyrLm2Vu0YHGgD6HWc4nFVCYhodAzxjLSG6G-MmPemEbY46X9O0dHprOiyRSlFp_8L4-vmemwZQmoPtdgkbVXrCMqNnzFZ8ONwnVOQF1o/s1600/IMG_3935.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" qaa="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJ4qYXyPJU0GBm7iWTabOD_6QflP_OlsQplapyrLm2Vu0YHGgD6HWc4nFVCYhodAzxjLSG6G-MmPemEbY46X9O0dHprOiyRSlFp_8L4-vmemwZQmoPtdgkbVXrCMqNnzFZ8ONwnVOQF1o/s320/IMG_3935.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
</div>Then you want to put on the bottom piece that holds the harp. Don't know what it is technically named, but be sure to put it on first, before you wire up the socket. Trust me on this, I wired the socket up first and had to take it apart to put the harp holder on. Lesson learned.<br />
<br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Now wire up the socket. Take apart the socket so you can see the two screws. Then screw one wire to each of the screws and tighten them down. My electrician hubby would probably school me on to the proper electrical current and terminals...but he wasn't home and I did it all by myself with no teaching. </div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguG-NMgyf7nC410KopreBPMbylCMNxZhKyzWsOoymlWWhUPLa4rH8voL3s6nvJQyyPotk5JPbdWDONXraQSLY3kSY7-yyKKLEq9u1qMVslYE5Mx7pILZsEax_wjZwwOU493pf7Fvk59W8/s1600/IMG_3937.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" qaa="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguG-NMgyf7nC410KopreBPMbylCMNxZhKyzWsOoymlWWhUPLa4rH8voL3s6nvJQyyPotk5JPbdWDONXraQSLY3kSY7-yyKKLEq9u1qMVslYE5Mx7pILZsEax_wjZwwOU493pf7Fvk59W8/s320/IMG_3937.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
</div>It is time to see if your wiring-work is legit. Screw a bulb into the socket and plug it in - be sure to place the cover of the screws so you don't get shocked! (Again, trust me on this. First time I have ever been zapped and it made me laugh, but this is no joking matter. Hubs would have shut the job down if he knew that last piece of info.)<br />
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAzcQE8_DAKkMxBJ3anuHah1jCIUEvQZJtmEVUEC22RZ-IgsgqqJEdBMZd0IZiFwig7HIsXtl_xuApATjRKjy2hEOdIhz75GHZnEvDpSyRFwfcgTMXLmaM0V6gymAiwJ6_dHrTQb01aGI/s1600/IMG_3940.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" qaa="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAzcQE8_DAKkMxBJ3anuHah1jCIUEvQZJtmEVUEC22RZ-IgsgqqJEdBMZd0IZiFwig7HIsXtl_xuApATjRKjy2hEOdIhz75GHZnEvDpSyRFwfcgTMXLmaM0V6gymAiwJ6_dHrTQb01aGI/s320/IMG_3940.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
If you are lucky, the bulb will shine. Woot for apprentice electricians, and/or DIY divas! Anyways, now you want to glue the harp holder and socket to the top of the tripod.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifQpp4kyaXjyiXDVJVhiSHiOExCfVKyr_Au8KaeF4TpEWrp6Vcm0kNFnzcPbTGaEd97wMcTlgC7jMmAvOHDSHKPY32WAFvqTELXYvEGVWCiePNcsBRg9kj1aOXL-RG8rNiUDz6DLa-ubQ/s1600/IMG_3941.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" qaa="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifQpp4kyaXjyiXDVJVhiSHiOExCfVKyr_Au8KaeF4TpEWrp6Vcm0kNFnzcPbTGaEd97wMcTlgC7jMmAvOHDSHKPY32WAFvqTELXYvEGVWCiePNcsBRg9kj1aOXL-RG8rNiUDz6DLa-ubQ/s320/IMG_3941.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
After it is dry, install the harp and lampshade. Then you have your very own tripod lamp.<br />

Total project costs - $1. I already had the shade ($2 from a thrift store, that will be recovered) and a lamp kit, from <a href="http://remodelthishouse.blogspot.com/2011/06/lamp-saga.html">this lamp project gone wrong</a>. One whole dollar for a room-warming, corner-brightening, rusty-goodness lamp. I love it! <br />
<br />
<em>Pssst - I took to Google to see just how much money I saved on this DIY. Looks like hundreds...</em><br />

I knew this was coming - when we had the <a href="http://remodelthishouse.blogspot.com/2011/01/welcome-lg-hi-macs.html">LG hi-macs installed</a>, they told us that the range we had was 27" and the standard size is 30" for a slide-in range. The <a href="http://remodelthishouse.blogspot.com/2011/01/welcome-lg-hi-macs.html">installers</a> said to call them back when I got a new stove and they would cut the counter tops for me. Perfect...until they quoted me $100. Yikes! It was time to cut the counter tops ourselves.<br />
<br />
My only worry about DIY- cutting the solid surface hi-macs was the warranty. So I called Lowe's (where we bought them from) and asked about the warranty - and to my surprise, cutting the counter tops for the range wouldn't void the warranty. But, if we messed up and cut wrong, the warranty wouldn't cover it. No pressure, right?! So what does a girl do? Call <a href="http://remodelthishouse.blogspot.com/2010/11/sneak-peak.html">her dad</a>. And he gladly agreed to help and bring his rotozip (which is an amazing tool, and I think I need one).<br />
<br />
Now for the fun part - actually cutting the solid surface counter tops. The tool of choice is a rotozip with a sc5 bit. First we measured and marked the cut lines. And then we measured again. And once more for good measure, pun intended. I say we, but these are obviously not my hands, they are dad's:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3V1Bu-uZC2u4ZJZDjhvE69v8rThRyBMId8z0CE9qAo5_BdehcANDpKmSCUzzmJ6ZQk2L-_Q6K99EzMQSlxjpOQ6N3HwuNs2TXTaBCKionlW2jKTpQwtAUp6Lz9juFWXB8GvVA-QtnlHo/s1600/IMG_3952.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" naa="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3V1Bu-uZC2u4ZJZDjhvE69v8rThRyBMId8z0CE9qAo5_BdehcANDpKmSCUzzmJ6ZQk2L-_Q6K99EzMQSlxjpOQ6N3HwuNs2TXTaBCKionlW2jKTpQwtAUp6Lz9juFWXB8GvVA-QtnlHo/s320/IMG_3952.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Then we lined up the square to use as a cut-line guide. (Actually, dad lined up the square. I was moral support.) And secured the square with tape and clamps.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0U2xBEBxsH0trst7p3JGbZxOrI1ilaOeF7L6-TBIU1W-SEmbp0gaQJ6HWZSKAb6HwffFsPGBL78ru2d-KZBcQ0SECmN9qF-hwn41FpIhLRRg48uGblkyt_BsfEn1dlmLQ02OLIjpakM8/s1600/IMG_3953.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" naa="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0U2xBEBxsH0trst7p3JGbZxOrI1ilaOeF7L6-TBIU1W-SEmbp0gaQJ6HWZSKAb6HwffFsPGBL78ru2d-KZBcQ0SECmN9qF-hwn41FpIhLRRg48uGblkyt_BsfEn1dlmLQ02OLIjpakM8/s320/IMG_3953.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
The bit of the rotozip is one inch from the outside cage/protector-thing. So the square is lined up one inch away from the cut line. Look closely, you can barely see the pencil mark in the photo above. Then the rotozip can be ran along the square to ensure that the cut line is straight and staying on track. Like so:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dxeGiYJidFIdxmzMsiKbwWOuooZ-zMrgnskmwlAE8V9wG1YQC8gx-Bsf7ij8Crk2_25MFinBMUerIf6iSt-Pw' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><br />
I suggest watching the video without sound...it is loud since the rotozip is on. The rotozip will eat through the solid surface easily and spit out tons of white dust/confetti-like pieces. <br />
<br />
Dad ran the rotozip down the length of the square. When he got to the end, we moved the square and then secured it with tape. We continued around the perimeter - he working the rotozip, and me holding the square and blowing away the white dust - until the counter tops were cut.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwX1wPiIQlEOCNjG0jXupd6gErYwQ5_HZ0CK99MrF7xf3VDRYFOOAsrBi3UnZ-ZKkzYgrWVvPLxIBqKlr1cbMds4wmbGIoqYlm9ifsyPQMicCiknPNMfDlz-bQ7PH6VGWYvAj93AfQ_tg/s1600/IMG_3959.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" naa="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwX1wPiIQlEOCNjG0jXupd6gErYwQ5_HZ0CK99MrF7xf3VDRYFOOAsrBi3UnZ-ZKkzYgrWVvPLxIBqKlr1cbMds4wmbGIoqYlm9ifsyPQMicCiknPNMfDlz-bQ7PH6VGWYvAj93AfQ_tg/s320/IMG_3959.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Then it was time to bring in the new range and watch my electrician hubby work. Side note - I just noticed that you can see the old hardwood color where he is sitting, and then the new dark walnut color in the top left. I hope no one ever pulls out the range because I didn't refinish the hardwood under the range.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8Ay_xwE6h6ASX7VjDvGoUi7f8tZa9uN7VkCVenCXMvcbPLuNQM-rkz3MyNygwhGi3uFWpyzoNHL-wx8iyhMYlbOU8W6RYpV8d1dYxHRyG9SaIbH8KK164WGTmnQPBk8g-i9dIV6UtXr4/s1600/Picture.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" naa="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8Ay_xwE6h6ASX7VjDvGoUi7f8tZa9uN7VkCVenCXMvcbPLuNQM-rkz3MyNygwhGi3uFWpyzoNHL-wx8iyhMYlbOU8W6RYpV8d1dYxHRyG9SaIbH8KK164WGTmnQPBk8g-i9dIV6UtXr4/s320/Picture.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
After he worked his magic on the out-of-code wiring and hooked up the range, I jumped for joy and gave everyone hugs. I am so excited about the new range and love how it updates the kitchen...all for 225 bucks! Money well spent.<br />

Have you cut on your counter tops? Do you need a rotozip too?</div>Bethanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03323571942171417314noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6746607057016252990.post-18059140259665957882011-08-14T18:13:00.000-05:002011-08-14T18:13:57.650-05:00Shopping At The RestoreIt is no secret that I love to hunt for treasures at any thrift store, but one of my favorites is the Habitat for Humanity Restore. You never know what you will find inside - from building supplies to home decor. So on my latest trip, I snapped a few pics with my phone to share some of the goodies.<br />
<br />
I was first surprised at the new tile - pallets and pallets of it. All of the boxes were still wrapped in plastic. There were both 12x12 and 18x18 in brown, beige, and gray. And very reasonably priced at $9.95 a box. I don't know how much the broom cost.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjziwqXxK12NgSZR6yARMHtFkBydSUGWmd2zBhzlv5xUyJ76Ejl0yGRxxE-JvISyVIv1BlrpcFvFtxB1_jcxmzMPmceFKWpkWUSXzLjdXzoRKQBuHaG3f6Bs2DF82zSa2PmgWEykDkuKj0/s1600/IMG_1121.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjziwqXxK12NgSZR6yARMHtFkBydSUGWmd2zBhzlv5xUyJ76Ejl0yGRxxE-JvISyVIv1BlrpcFvFtxB1_jcxmzMPmceFKWpkWUSXzLjdXzoRKQBuHaG3f6Bs2DF82zSa2PmgWEykDkuKj0/s320/IMG_1121.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Then I ran across these dog houses. I have never seen dog houses at the Restore, so I had to take a picture. They were a good size and well built. With a little paint and TLC, they would make a fine casa for a dog. I would love to paint a cute house for my puppies, but they are much too spoiled to stay outside. I didn't see a price and didn't ask.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyp3oe6EfEOC2bApPnEFsZZxtty5JdDP5qEUPI6IZmHoKSC8tWNKn-5mj6L8mbpSS9bxS-_sz4u-H5-DYkuAiXcxLg7jZVIZ8iHJCwcaXZXUc8oRXKhtP9PHm_mbSLOTTAvPe0NEzwjCo/s1600/IMG_1122.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyp3oe6EfEOC2bApPnEFsZZxtty5JdDP5qEUPI6IZmHoKSC8tWNKn-5mj6L8mbpSS9bxS-_sz4u-H5-DYkuAiXcxLg7jZVIZ8iHJCwcaXZXUc8oRXKhtP9PHm_mbSLOTTAvPe0NEzwjCo/s320/IMG_1122.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
And then I came upon a sea of school desks. Seriously, there had to be at least 50 of them stacked up. I can picture them with funky color spray painted legs and a mod-podge map top. Or a chalkboard paint top. Tons of potential...but I have no use for a kid-size school desk. <a href="http://remodelthishouse.blogspot.com/2011/07/knockoff-mod-podge-recipe.html">Click here for a knock-off mod podge recipe.</a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggyILG4WY_V_DGYqUiUQQPWKV5xzsH-Cl_R9Gq6xeciWygxnxgGtB0Wa4_ON4WT2ZptOgia_BjeXxXyyDZj3tiOwUloi7OkbVQPeOJI3tgwv8QFtzkB3lr7YtrSHJSPonlNPV_pFBPaCE/s1600/IMG_1123.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggyILG4WY_V_DGYqUiUQQPWKV5xzsH-Cl_R9Gq6xeciWygxnxgGtB0Wa4_ON4WT2ZptOgia_BjeXxXyyDZj3tiOwUloi7OkbVQPeOJI3tgwv8QFtzkB3lr7YtrSHJSPonlNPV_pFBPaCE/s320/IMG_1123.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
I also found these two attic ladders. They were in perfect shape and priced to sell at $25. And I need a new ladder because ours is so womper-jawed it is scary dangerous. But I decided to momentarily pass so that I could measure the attic hole in the house. I would hate to get the wrong size and then have to reframe the attic opening. I will stick with scary-ladder before that much work.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjxWzJT0IYPBmk9877aIYAYpTM333fzsGtwkfp0Imi262BA2jDXZBG99zmsODXCcvqkxfB7YwKx14COeTxdcp835QnEdN0O_0YI5ju8fXsRlTo8JxA5pDArz7I6vwPIIqAwZH8IRKvr2s/s1600/IMG_1125.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjxWzJT0IYPBmk9877aIYAYpTM333fzsGtwkfp0Imi262BA2jDXZBG99zmsODXCcvqkxfB7YwKx14COeTxdcp835QnEdN0O_0YI5ju8fXsRlTo8JxA5pDArz7I6vwPIIqAwZH8IRKvr2s/s320/IMG_1125.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br />
Finally I purchased this:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUxm3R1p67SBWpzehdNKrnzhyphenhyphenawOn8bGMcUclMzkkwXDYt-Vtr4ZxyFIqca5p3N4k0ZKxdXUdZOFn3Fj9ZOp7vGCuHI9I7mBZbmTvMeUBgA1QZdkzTTwAD4vXObYFUFYSMcG58N43ded8/s1600/IMG_1117.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUxm3R1p67SBWpzehdNKrnzhyphenhyphenawOn8bGMcUclMzkkwXDYt-Vtr4ZxyFIqca5p3N4k0ZKxdXUdZOFn3Fj9ZOp7vGCuHI9I7mBZbmTvMeUBgA1QZdkzTTwAD4vXObYFUFYSMcG58N43ded8/s320/IMG_1117.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br />
I could not believe my eyes when I saw it. A white, slide-in electric range with a flat surface, priced at 225 beans...sold in an almost-instant. I first texted a pic of it to the hubby to let him know I was buying it and then to my mom to get the final seal of approval. I really wanted stainless steel (who doesn't?!) but with the white cabinets and existing white dishwasher, this was the best route to go...especially since it is worlds nicer than the old one and cost pennies compared to a brand new range.<br />
<br />
Now <strike>we are</strike> I am the proud owner of a new-to-me range that is bigger than the old one...which means the counter tops have to be cut. Never cut on solid surface counter tops before, but sure am going to give it a go. Stay tuned! So, any great finds at a thrift store lately? Ever found an item that was too-good-to-be-true? Is your dog in need of a new casa? Or are you going to go buy one of the school desks to upcycle and relove?Bethanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03323571942171417314noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6746607057016252990.post-54688182656151687252011-08-11T18:29:00.000-05:002011-08-11T18:29:37.477-05:00Floor PlanDuring some down time at the conference, I grabbed a pen and started drawing the house floor plan. I thought this would be easy to do...after all, I do live there. However, it was not easy and I actually had to draw it twice - the first time I forgot the coat closet and pantry. So, here is my horrible drawing of my floor plan:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8T2w7wMCojW9ibugYobv6udSt_8rJLBzfDGiLM4LqZQHGN_m8TUGrLekxxuHpjppZLfxsxUqxBwIUp6lD_21YLKWTP_dmz98b5ebLMID7M__Hy1jNdvy59hiClH4EqWvEE9CLWSFww44/s1600/IMG_3931.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8T2w7wMCojW9ibugYobv6udSt_8rJLBzfDGiLM4LqZQHGN_m8TUGrLekxxuHpjppZLfxsxUqxBwIUp6lD_21YLKWTP_dmz98b5ebLMID7M__Hy1jNdvy59hiClH4EqWvEE9CLWSFww44/s400/IMG_3931.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
Now you can get the flow of the house. You can see how the <a href="http://remodelthishouse.blogspot.com/2011/07/stripe-me.html">laundry room</a> is like a hallway and know where the <a href="http://remodelthishouse.blogspot.com/2010/12/me-woman-you-man-cave-reveal.html">Man Cave</a> is. That is if you can read my hand writing. <br />
<br />
I will make time to measure and draw a proper floor plan. It will be different, I can see mistakes in my drawing. But the general flow and placement is close. Bethanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03323571942171417314noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6746607057016252990.post-25851541993612095512011-08-08T19:31:00.000-05:002011-08-08T19:31:40.807-05:00How To Paint HardwareWhen we bought our house, all of the hardware was brass and gold. And being the cheap-o that I am, I had to try spray painting the hardware instead of buying new. But....I didn't take any picture of the process. What was I thinking? So, when a friend (hi Janet!) asked me to paint the knobs and hinges from her rent house, I excitedly said yes! And I remembered to take pictures this time. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpPQUQbe7ujfDipb8mKrCG2uN7CW70ilQcTV1P12aF5DqixkFjKCepU1cmvBZqqTHms226QUFKwgyx8sUSrTCD7-rZx-kvPg-YitsWkgEQn2GGia-Irs9emOFiVBUGwhfTETcHrZDu8zY/s1600/IMG_3915.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpPQUQbe7ujfDipb8mKrCG2uN7CW70ilQcTV1P12aF5DqixkFjKCepU1cmvBZqqTHms226QUFKwgyx8sUSrTCD7-rZx-kvPg-YitsWkgEQn2GGia-Irs9emOFiVBUGwhfTETcHrZDu8zY/s320/IMG_3915.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
First you need to remove all of the gunk and crud that has built up over time. The easiest way to do this is to soak everything in the kitchen sink in warm water with TSP. (TSP is trisodium phosphate and is a great degreaser. I bought my carton at Lowe's in the paint section.) Now go watch a movie while the TSP does all of the hard work.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCvp3juILYuIVTbakwT4mlrAcJJV2Uqxe6VFgcOAj2YfX-TT7e9iz6rB2Xzc_P4EC5tRIz7JlZXNfZKDAzsh8F8a67Vyf8ex2DD0-pK_G5ZRpR5ZDhyphenhyphenkGB3FZMuHld7JjpVxqxQoYGKrk/s1600/IMG_3916.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCvp3juILYuIVTbakwT4mlrAcJJV2Uqxe6VFgcOAj2YfX-TT7e9iz6rB2Xzc_P4EC5tRIz7JlZXNfZKDAzsh8F8a67Vyf8ex2DD0-pK_G5ZRpR5ZDhyphenhyphenkGB3FZMuHld7JjpVxqxQoYGKrk/s320/IMG_3916.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
After the movie, take the hardware out of the sink and quickly scrub it to make sure that it is sparkling clean. Then you want to sand everything. I used 220 grit paper and sanded and sanded and sanded. Make sure that you sand the entire surface. <br />
<br />
Janet wanted a custom color....something like oil rubbed bronze, but not as dark, with a little tan. The best solution was mixing two different colors of spray paint. To get the color, first spray a light coat of oil rubbed bronze. Then a light coat of saddle tan. Do this 5 times. The end result is a great color. <br />
<br />
But before painting, first it is primer time. Spray the hardware with gray primer. Use a piece of styrofoam to stick the screws in so you can paint the heads easier. Also be sure to paint the back-side of the hardware first. This way the visible front side will have the smoothest finish.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh-ajHVPCTt9xeo1lZ_sECEEOKngU8f9oRlMbuWXRnXphQHwVVM2w1UUH_zIgWFrWL_sIekBiTzVtGBgcMde_tnZjuRHbFSQSGtLz9HYkju4176YUTwBPQPGTVF_bY3zbZga2_Vmg6nz4/s1600/IMG_1108.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh-ajHVPCTt9xeo1lZ_sECEEOKngU8f9oRlMbuWXRnXphQHwVVM2w1UUH_zIgWFrWL_sIekBiTzVtGBgcMde_tnZjuRHbFSQSGtLz9HYkju4176YUTwBPQPGTVF_bY3zbZga2_Vmg6nz4/s320/IMG_1108.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">After the primer is dry, start spray painting. You can do a single color or a mix of colors...but the key is to spray multiple light coats. These knobs have 5 coats of paint. I'm not going to go in to detail about spray painting. Just keep the coats light, keep your arm moving, and keep the can about 10 inches from what you are painting.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqNXJaya9XjgLnCcnleJ_IcOz8gIlVV60WqOzQ0FHLmKtSnorf9Rt2mTxQtCcTY-K2Rcb68P0qqlSSx38TJTSH8cxUUeVpuUwzuRBaXBc0gL7KfaUWSJYKhSJ3nBswvo2tA5FtIN4_gc4/s1600/IMG_1110.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqNXJaya9XjgLnCcnleJ_IcOz8gIlVV60WqOzQ0FHLmKtSnorf9Rt2mTxQtCcTY-K2Rcb68P0qqlSSx38TJTSH8cxUUeVpuUwzuRBaXBc0gL7KfaUWSJYKhSJ3nBswvo2tA5FtIN4_gc4/s320/IMG_1110.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Final step is the clear coat. Pick what ever finish of clear coat that suits your fancy. I used satin on this project. Evenly spray the top coat over the entire surface. Then let the knobs dry and fully cure before installing them. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Here is the sample card and the finished knobs. I'd say that the color is fairly close.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqZannL5_FgPKeK546jF6y8aFJoWgzxSeF_xPke6nx9kAs6NcqL2qrAtJsFaG-3JD1B-pNIVKZFvkFoCiByd3shlpSZkfuQpg68QJBrpvZrGA_EcBQpzdrRIbn0vcj6DgP_PMmkWY-Nz8/s1600/IMG_1114.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqZannL5_FgPKeK546jF6y8aFJoWgzxSeF_xPke6nx9kAs6NcqL2qrAtJsFaG-3JD1B-pNIVKZFvkFoCiByd3shlpSZkfuQpg68QJBrpvZrGA_EcBQpzdrRIbn0vcj6DgP_PMmkWY-Nz8/s320/IMG_1114.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">That sums it up. Painting hardware is easy and cheap...and it will stand up to normal wear and tear if you prep the pieces correctly. Have y'all painted any hardware? Any tips that I might have forgotten? </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><em>Psst - I will be out most of this week at a work conference. I totally forgot the July recap. How does time fly so quickly?<br />
<br />
Anyways, I wanted to share two pictures of my niece, Em. (Notice the pun in the title?) While working on the new old house, she was insistent on helping. So we got her a paint brush and put her to work.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh22-12GN6FmJeOYx7n7YASnjk_6MC1ETrtYj6UE7u_4_tUVtks7c9TfUobGcXJbZe05IDuZmA9LBpFXZGkDb5h8qPpqv_8ZQ3Kx0JqxhqPIfklwc7-VsCtI_X8qRU8dWWKf6mBBSaEfbI/s1600/IMG_0996.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh22-12GN6FmJeOYx7n7YASnjk_6MC1ETrtYj6UE7u_4_tUVtks7c9TfUobGcXJbZe05IDuZmA9LBpFXZGkDb5h8qPpqv_8ZQ3Kx0JqxhqPIfklwc7-VsCtI_X8qRU8dWWKf6mBBSaEfbI/s320/IMG_0996.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br />
She quickly realized that what we were doing was not fun. Sure we might have laughed and joked while we worked, but it was so hot that I think we were more delusional and crazy than anything. Em must have thought we looked like we were having fun. But since we are all DIYers, she was a great help and such a trooper. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKcuu16wvc7rde2iqT4LTLzBC-bkxTbu-ZZygqgl9oI1eNDZoz2kVTh3WfZKNi7XI0pPbbpuMgg_mnnwe8wVPTdv9Oh3_J9gd4U62QJyVd9Bk7gRy7xLbc48IPReEbyHzMw7YmsCpH5rk/s1600/IMG_0997.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKcuu16wvc7rde2iqT4LTLzBC-bkxTbu-ZZygqgl9oI1eNDZoz2kVTh3WfZKNi7XI0pPbbpuMgg_mnnwe8wVPTdv9Oh3_J9gd4U62QJyVd9Bk7gRy7xLbc48IPReEbyHzMw7YmsCpH5rk/s320/IMG_0997.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br />
So....HAPPY 6th BIRTHDAY my little DIYer. Glad to know that you started early and I am super proud of you!Bethanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03323571942171417314noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6746607057016252990.post-31480725486515729672011-08-03T20:28:00.000-05:002011-08-03T20:28:27.884-05:00Birds Of A Feather<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">When my friend came over the other day with a box in her hands, I knew she had brought me something great. And it was a surprise...I had no idea she was bringing something! She told me that while going through her grandmother's things, she instantly knew that I would want what was in the box. (The entire time she is telling the story, I have no clue what it is.) So, when I opened it, there were two vintage, ugly metal peacocks inside. She was so right, I instantly fell in love with them! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOYXL6v6oKhTjWbEXg4DIQMKr3SK1lG4-yMQdFlSPOcBK708WDdIzDC7QJitwQw9ISaLOPxhOm216gRaltCQYkCeHV0w_suekO6ZuKAHA7kVHCgyjiVY1l3F9yttbTg-T_9YvmQVxExlo/s1600/IMG_1091.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOYXL6v6oKhTjWbEXg4DIQMKr3SK1lG4-yMQdFlSPOcBK708WDdIzDC7QJitwQw9ISaLOPxhOm216gRaltCQYkCeHV0w_suekO6ZuKAHA7kVHCgyjiVY1l3F9yttbTg-T_9YvmQVxExlo/s320/IMG_1091.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
One was green-ish, and the other was blue-ish. But they were both rusty in a few spots. These twins were too great to pass up. And I knew that a little spray paint would fix them right up. <br />
<br />
I grabbed the twins in my hands and walked around the house trying to figure out where to place them. Finally I decided that they both belonged in the sun room. It is the obvious choice since Merlin (the hubby's bird) is stationed in the sun room. I can corral all of the birds into one spot - the sun room.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEik9iiyS3RiJ-mc4AXdwXDhzw-3r1irkJDzx4CrVhQPVFRoaNK5yP8jFz_xyq2dzfizXB50fi8FcYAnwvzBdS444CLC97f_nHRNYmI7oAlMQrllu33U53dN_mtx9t9AUpLI7UyF9oK7uII/s1600/IMG_1101.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEik9iiyS3RiJ-mc4AXdwXDhzw-3r1irkJDzx4CrVhQPVFRoaNK5yP8jFz_xyq2dzfizXB50fi8FcYAnwvzBdS444CLC97f_nHRNYmI7oAlMQrllu33U53dN_mtx9t9AUpLI7UyF9oK7uII/s320/IMG_1101.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br />
So I took to the yard to spray paint these peacocks white. I know, plain ol' white again. But I didn't want anything bright because I want the <a href="http://remodelthishouse.blogspot.com/2011/07/window-window-on-wall.html">mustache photos</a> to be the main attraction in the sun room. <br />
<br />
Drying time is about 10 seconds right now because the 110 degree temps instantly bake the paint dry. The back of the can says to spray under 90 degrees...at this rate, it would be November before I could paint the peacocks. So I broke the rules and painted them anyways. And after they dried, I hung them on the wall with a single nail. And then stepped back to admire my new, free peacocks.<br />

<br />
Lots of spray painting:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUOeRNS6MMoSLKTlTS4GKxcEFMfgrG-dxBH-jkI3ixI3fX0d1Uk-D60vCoDXNA1uqeYG3IJ3VtLUmIyLmDKlXyn7o0ocvqqjBOwhznSbDDTpFweQehJ0i4QUnLWTrfcIAovGvbl0Nw-3s/s1600/Picture+007.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUOeRNS6MMoSLKTlTS4GKxcEFMfgrG-dxBH-jkI3ixI3fX0d1Uk-D60vCoDXNA1uqeYG3IJ3VtLUmIyLmDKlXyn7o0ocvqqjBOwhznSbDDTpFweQehJ0i4QUnLWTrfcIAovGvbl0Nw-3s/s320/Picture+007.jpg" t$="true" width="240" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div>And building with pallets:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjoxtHnwR6HTWKAAf9t1MQ_zTzi2uAsvKEl3NwEhpIzATp4XvP5qRqyCv7YrxiFAlVK42ONcj6Su7UveilbmhFxh0F82qok-X4sGFBWcDXbPe-Bc5X3Vy4QvCSWRAygI9CxAgU18cZEBk/s1600/Picture+006.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjoxtHnwR6HTWKAAf9t1MQ_zTzi2uAsvKEl3NwEhpIzATp4XvP5qRqyCv7YrxiFAlVK42ONcj6Su7UveilbmhFxh0F82qok-X4sGFBWcDXbPe-Bc5X3Vy4QvCSWRAygI9CxAgU18cZEBk/s320/Picture+006.jpg" t$="true" width="320" /></a></div><br />
With a little furniture rehabbing:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhl5GzbCG5_f7kWBw0CDA6JekbDre0088qygxykNc4FT9eXT9QzNNw3aXArlM27dIi1nhyphenhyphen9phSEaW1QEtqaNSA9Uj602C2esJX8lQDMOz1PHyLQhyphenhyphen8Gte_ha3BOzs3tsejmmXmc8e2pwWk/s1600/Picture+002.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhl5GzbCG5_f7kWBw0CDA6JekbDre0088qygxykNc4FT9eXT9QzNNw3aXArlM27dIi1nhyphenhyphen9phSEaW1QEtqaNSA9Uj602C2esJX8lQDMOz1PHyLQhyphenhyphen8Gte_ha3BOzs3tsejmmXmc8e2pwWk/s320/Picture+002.jpg" t$="true" width="240" /></a></div><br />
Plus a sneak peek inside a gorgeous house:<br />

I have been a busy bee. And there are so many great things I need to share with y'all...but first I must find the time to write a proper blog post.Bethanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03323571942171417314noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6746607057016252990.post-39789396699244739222011-07-30T18:36:00.000-05:002011-07-30T18:36:10.781-05:00DIY Pallet Bed FrameThe post title pretty much says it all - I made a bed frame from pallets. Best part is that the pallets were free! Love free stuff and love repurposing. And before you tell me about the bad chemicals in pallets, I'm gonna say - not these pallets! They are certified clean of the bad stuff.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj34TbunOM4Lehvj7AfiHzSh6fQJnYPprAlY_4YIkgXXpfYNvC4fZXHEK6laO5AZ9d1su46Eeg1We2uLjlIrwIr1w1u9nA_OEYEsboQO6Z0C_ubM30_QxIqRyBqCigBVOY_-_vdgQfREcU/s1600/IMG_1027.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj34TbunOM4Lehvj7AfiHzSh6fQJnYPprAlY_4YIkgXXpfYNvC4fZXHEK6laO5AZ9d1su46Eeg1We2uLjlIrwIr1w1u9nA_OEYEsboQO6Z0C_ubM30_QxIqRyBqCigBVOY_-_vdgQfREcU/s320/IMG_1027.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br />
Anyways, I'm getting a little off topic.I have been seeing a lot of things made from pallets lately. And I got inspired to make a day bed frame since we sold the queen size bed in the guest room and down-sized to a full. The pallets I used were jumbo size - 54 x 40. Most pallets are 48 x 40. And since a full size mattress is 54 x 75, these pallets were made for repurposing into a bed frame. <em>Too many numbers there? Sorry, just fast-forward to the pics below.</em><br />
<br />
To make the bed frame, I first laid the pallets out on the ground to measure. Then I marked where I was going to cut. And then I used my saw to cut them. That finger is my friend pointing to the cut line. He helped me move the pallets too. Thanks Josh!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwAaICd1U5CyX8SAo9aTzVbjJ67AatdrZv78GpgGjt09gF0JdBlA3OBm1z5zf199FnAeS1rjC7sQbhHkdpkZI1W34YseqkBgtkua-Oep0Qehncw_3cinn3a0X93Y4gsO3NJGsBNEoozPg/s1600/IMG_1028.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwAaICd1U5CyX8SAo9aTzVbjJ67AatdrZv78GpgGjt09gF0JdBlA3OBm1z5zf199FnAeS1rjC7sQbhHkdpkZI1W34YseqkBgtkua-Oep0Qehncw_3cinn3a0X93Y4gsO3NJGsBNEoozPg/s320/IMG_1028.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicX-Ygh99NKbaA0fjI-FmgQSA8I7vAHltOVGQ4jL1f8vBL61qSJgC48_4uXCM12ZOB-ffrKEo3a_FBf8T4wjMprJTxdMvvTvxqjYdG7UVLBe7sFTRfYqQtpS-RHG63xfQ0d1PsNSb8Eb8/s1600/IMG_1029.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicX-Ygh99NKbaA0fjI-FmgQSA8I7vAHltOVGQ4jL1f8vBL61qSJgC48_4uXCM12ZOB-ffrKEo3a_FBf8T4wjMprJTxdMvvTvxqjYdG7UVLBe7sFTRfYqQtpS-RHG63xfQ0d1PsNSb8Eb8/s320/IMG_1029.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br />
Next I pried apart the discarded cut piece to salvage the support board. I could have cut a new support board...but why? I would rather save my pennies and get an arm work-out in the 100 degree weather. After I fought with the pallet, I squeezed the support board into the cut area to hold up the top. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIvb1mLSIK7U5lh-gtpEuzr5OYkPK8iAhwCyJU-JbU-etYx4ahZUmP_o93ETgnF8TA-SeZ4IYZ6VJJfEcK2kMONT27ESIdfPNJu_7M3UYZY6STgsaNq80y8LWt-8Rie23_NV5sks4eUvE/s1600/IMG_1030.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIvb1mLSIK7U5lh-gtpEuzr5OYkPK8iAhwCyJU-JbU-etYx4ahZUmP_o93ETgnF8TA-SeZ4IYZ6VJJfEcK2kMONT27ESIdfPNJu_7M3UYZY6STgsaNq80y8LWt-8Rie23_NV5sks4eUvE/s320/IMG_1030.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br />
Then I nailed in the salvaged support board to the cut pallet. After that, which was a pain since I always use a drill, we moved the pallets into the guest room. And to protect the mattress from the bare wood, I used the bed skirt as a barrier.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiT4Et6Lr6JAvgl7UA8b0bFjmU3bCP5R1HS-h8gEO9F4eXcHqGz7rjcUjYarUb-9I-PCR6CMX7iA4klSc-Drp1ai8Mh-u3I0MqgK9i1hCWzK9UKql1APGlnqo6pjXwpIfymECdpTn8G30/s1600/IMG_1083.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiT4Et6Lr6JAvgl7UA8b0bFjmU3bCP5R1HS-h8gEO9F4eXcHqGz7rjcUjYarUb-9I-PCR6CMX7iA4klSc-Drp1ai8Mh-u3I0MqgK9i1hCWzK9UKql1APGlnqo6pjXwpIfymECdpTn8G30/s320/IMG_1083.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

So there is my free DIY bed frame. And I have already made the new "headboard" for the day bed. Just have to repair a few little holes in the wall from where the panel headboard was secured. Oh - and the Habitat for Humanity is taking the panel headboard. They are going to auction it off in their Restore & After fundraiser! <br />
<br />
I am making some progress in the guest room now. The large queen bed has been replaced with a full size mattress that I am using as a day bed. Next I need to figure out the desk situation. I <a href="http://remodelthishouse.blogspot.com/2010/11/build-desk-workshop.html">love the desk I built</a>, but I don't think it is the best solution for the room anymore.Bethanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03323571942171417314noreply@blogger.com22tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6746607057016252990.post-37320782615223168642011-07-27T07:38:00.000-05:002011-07-27T07:38:23.241-05:00RTH House Crashes - LiterallyWhen my BFF got stuck in a rut on her house remodel, I lent my DIY helping hand to the remodel...at the cost of the projects being on the blog. We have all had it happen to us - start out strong on a remodel project and then get busy with life and the remodel takes a back burner (happens to me all the time). This was no different, but she was soooo close to finishing and I am thrilled to help out.<br />
<br />
With girl power in full swing, we tackled her bathroom, more specifically the open linen closet. There used to be cabinets in the space by the shower, but she wanted something different instead of the closed up cabinets. An open closet was the perfect solution. She had already done the hard work - floating the wall and painting. I just came in at the last minute to help install shelves.<br />
<br />
First we cut 2x2 boards to use as supports. And then we cut the plywood for the shelves. Then we sanded and primed the boards. Then we marked the lines in the closet where she wanted the shelves. Next we drilled pilot holes into the 2x2 boards so they wouldn't crack. Then, finally, we screwed in the 2x2's:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQYm6NCsstVt5nAx8eveteO5O6L-_VurQxw1_VQH0DT63pa1Gg-qlMNkWkUvLk7nlB_puvVo8T_aJit8BzlfEPXxyKU2LJtGqCYyYyt-Xz4bsMaBQQe8NqEJTIu97iSyFhrvfoOCaKI3g/s1600/photo2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQYm6NCsstVt5nAx8eveteO5O6L-_VurQxw1_VQH0DT63pa1Gg-qlMNkWkUvLk7nlB_puvVo8T_aJit8BzlfEPXxyKU2LJtGqCYyYyt-Xz4bsMaBQQe8NqEJTIu97iSyFhrvfoOCaKI3g/s320/photo2.jpg" t$="true" width="240" /></a></div><br />
We kept a small level on the 2x2 at all times to make sure that it stayed level. And then we just kept screwing in the 2x2's on the previously marked lines and ended up with this:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgo0etXGF3YVyi6iLoqZWQ3RhsAtd0moby5jtXKkppbJy7XLHGWVRC7-Mukh2vAIsGmtNjt1rQtclPMRF4DKcO6zoNYP-jhCWKgX6xonMB8fwdk2niHimONDidKTMBrcUY9mm_64J6SnfM/s1600/photo1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgo0etXGF3YVyi6iLoqZWQ3RhsAtd0moby5jtXKkppbJy7XLHGWVRC7-Mukh2vAIsGmtNjt1rQtclPMRF4DKcO6zoNYP-jhCWKgX6xonMB8fwdk2niHimONDidKTMBrcUY9mm_64J6SnfM/s320/photo1.jpg" t$="true" width="240" /></a></div><br />
Looks a little like a ladder. Finally, we laid the plywood boards on top of the 2x2's and high-fived each other! Looks like an open linen closet to me:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGExs2g712AsN_U80v2tVXwE-m46kO61NUsuSvghxVyH8gegBumTeWOTCaJ4pb7soSq1qxgaC6t9P7hoL-knu0mpyT7F0TDvoy17mi-gZeboWjoqLUD0hyphenhypheneAUcmBa_dUAXjwGISlnRrHo/s1600/photo3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGExs2g712AsN_U80v2tVXwE-m46kO61NUsuSvghxVyH8gegBumTeWOTCaJ4pb7soSq1qxgaC6t9P7hoL-knu0mpyT7F0TDvoy17mi-gZeboWjoqLUD0hyphenhypheneAUcmBa_dUAXjwGISlnRrHo/s320/photo3.jpg" t$="true" width="240" /></a></div><br />
Go girl power! All that is left is to paint these little shelves and then call it done!Bethanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03323571942171417314noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6746607057016252990.post-56697094051246722212011-07-25T20:18:00.000-05:002011-07-25T20:18:29.483-05:00You Asked, I'm AnsweringHey y'all! I received a lot of sweet emails with some great questions and I'm here to spill all of the juicy details. Well, not juicy. Just matter-of-fact answers. So, let's get this show on the road. <br />
<br />
<strong>What is your can't live without tool? </strong><br />
Hmmm...that is difficult. I use my drill the most, so I guess that is the answer.<br />
<br />
<strong>What is your beauty routine?</strong> <span style="font-size: xx-small;">Or something similar - favorite makeup, go-to products , etc</span>. <br />
Ha! No beauty routines here. The only thing I do that is not really common (but it isn't a secret) is that I wash my hair with conditioner, no shampoo. <em>Google will enlighten you about conditioner-only washes.</em> And products I love - C.O. Bigelow lip gloss, Cover FX makeup, and coconut oil for my hair. That's it, but the list is subject to change at anytime.<br />
<br />
<strong>Your husband, what does he think about the remodel?</strong><br />
Well, he is just along for the ride. He never knows what he will come home to - a remodeled bathroom, a new piece of furniture, a torn-up floor, new paint, etc. He says he doesn't care, but I secretly think he loves it.<br />
<br />
<strong>Why remodeling? Your house is great!</strong><br />
True, it is a great house. Call me crazy, but remodeling is fun to me...hence, remodeling the house. I would work on any house, even a brand new one.<br />
<br />
<strong>Is your house a forever-house?</strong><br />
No, not even close. It is our first house. And we are both ready to move closer to his work. Hopefully we will be selling and buying next year.<br />
<br />
<strong>Favorite project?</strong><br />
I have never been asked this. I think it is the living room since that is where we spend most of our time. Replacing the carpet with hardwood, tearing out the built ins, and revamping the fireplace made huge improvements.<br />
<br />
<strong>How long have you and the hubby been together?</strong><br />
6 years dating + almost 6 year married = 12 years. We were high school sweethearts and I guess he never got tired of my crazy antics because he is still around.<br />
<br />
<strong>Do you make inspiration boards?</strong><br />
Not for myself, but I love to make them for other people. I have a general idea of what I want the finished room to look like, but usually I just wing it and see what happens. So far I haven't redone anything. Are you in need of one? I can whip you up something!<br />
<br />
<strong>Have you ever had to hire someone to do a project?</strong><br />
Hmmm...does having the counter tops installed count? The installation was free with the purchase! Or does having family help count? Those are the only two things that I can think of. We have never paid someone for their work...unless you count food for the family.<br />
<br />
<strong>Where is that floor plan you promised?</strong><br />
It's in the works... Who am I kidding? I haven't started on it. But it is on the list of things-to-do. So one day I'll get around to it. <br />
<br />
If I count correctly, that is 10 questions and 10 answers. There were a few other questions that came in, but I just replied and answered them - things like paint colors, where I got something, etc. Maybe this helped answer some of your burning questions. If not, feel free to <a href="mailto:remodelthishouse@gmail.com">ask</a> away. I love to talk!Bethanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03323571942171417314noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6746607057016252990.post-66703828109328031392011-07-24T11:02:00.000-05:002011-07-24T11:02:01.487-05:00Cabinet Door Memo BoardA quick little project to gain some much needed memo board / note space...and it is all hidden behind a cabinet door. This project really came in handy after I removed my memo board from the<a href="http://remodelthishouse.blogspot.com/2011/07/stripe-me.html"> laundry room to paint the funky stripes.</a> Instead of putting the board back on the wall, I repurposed the inside of a kitchen cabinet door into a memo board. (Gee, how many times can I say memo board in one post?!)<br />
<br />
All you need to make this is some cork, scissors or exacto knife, and spray glue. And, of course, a cabinet door. This is my spice cabinet.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTNk0U4o1zXqg0Ashsn6ExeBwEKv9GOhJuzx1TATaffbKZCrHRhhG_GPwS9o8J7GQvG8ySzrt-TQUrdtoWDzZRKFofSCplAoyk-Rh9-21YQF3zMPAdUaOKYCqr2yoiEAPIglmoQShCyb4/s1600/IMG_3881.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTNk0U4o1zXqg0Ashsn6ExeBwEKv9GOhJuzx1TATaffbKZCrHRhhG_GPwS9o8J7GQvG8ySzrt-TQUrdtoWDzZRKFofSCplAoyk-Rh9-21YQF3zMPAdUaOKYCqr2yoiEAPIglmoQShCyb4/s320/IMG_3881.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br />
First, trim the cork to the needed size. I roughly measured a little larger than needed. Then I held the cork up and used the exacto knife to get an exact fit.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNR06nDhVkxvAdt6_etIHMHquK5ImSaSZs88ZsUTs4ENmX1Oif_YX26LJL6mep4rUnSJej7bNl6jgC8Ax-OR071Wml4_q0ZHjKB5t1OR4hblw1jO8NtcW6cDw0VYoUjbBD-gGmROSfmxg/s1600/IMG_3883.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNR06nDhVkxvAdt6_etIHMHquK5ImSaSZs88ZsUTs4ENmX1Oif_YX26LJL6mep4rUnSJej7bNl6jgC8Ax-OR071Wml4_q0ZHjKB5t1OR4hblw1jO8NtcW6cDw0VYoUjbBD-gGmROSfmxg/s320/IMG_3883.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Next, spray the glue onto the cabinet door where the cork will be placed. Finally, place the cork onto the glue and hold in place for a few seconds. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7hnAe6K3NOChDOmTyp7RV__vwAAZYtmFk1q8MnringdiDQmVts5v8YhpwxDwfGHcodkaoy66xdntXIa-VORMBbmUDd3eDzkE4oP1Qwc5YNJDN3eOB-TFoTshiW3Ujx3AG9gXonAPZPWM/s1600/IMG_3886.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7hnAe6K3NOChDOmTyp7RV__vwAAZYtmFk1q8MnringdiDQmVts5v8YhpwxDwfGHcodkaoy66xdntXIa-VORMBbmUDd3eDzkE4oP1Qwc5YNJDN3eOB-TFoTshiW3Ujx3AG9gXonAPZPWM/s320/IMG_3886.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br />
Yay for hidden storage! Now fill the space up with pictures, mementos, business cards, etc. This project works well for my cabinet doors because they are paneled and the cork fits snugly. A bonus is that I get to see smiling faces when I open my spice cabinet - not everyone gets to say that about their cabinets.<br />

And the best part is that the side of my fridge got a good cleaning as well. Maybe I am OCD, but I don't like things on the front of my fridge, so they are banished to the side. But now, I moved the few items to the memo board. Happy day!<br />
<br />
So...what are your hidden storage secrets? Anyone else have cabinet door memo boards? Or do you have other great ideas for cabinet doors? I made a few of my old cabinet doors in chalkboards. <br />
<br />
Attention friends & family - I have a really nice memo board if someone needs it. I'll even give it away, since I'm nice like that. Here it is, hanging in the pre-striped laundry room:<br />

I was browsing through TJ Maxx when I ran across them. And there were also extension cords and roller skates. Do these get awarded to the best painters? Maybe this is some hot trend and I am getting too old to understand?! Let me tell you, it sure was hard to pass that red one up...... yeah right!<br />
<br />
Fess up now. What do you think about these? Would you proudly display on your mantel? Or maybe you are already an owner of a paintbrush trophy?!Bethanyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03323571942171417314noreply@blogger.com4
